Learning the essential skills of safe fire lighting, fire management and outdoor cooking

2 hr

Service Description

This session introduces you to the essential skills of safe fire lighting, fire management and outdoor cooking. With a focus on presence, self-reliance and working with the elements, we’ll explore how fire can become a focal point for connection, nourishment and creativity in an outdoor setting. We’ll begin with grounding activities and time to settle into the woodland space. We’ll then move into learning how to safely build, light and sustain a fire. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of outdoor cooking techniques, including cooking directly in the embers, skewering food over the fire, and cooking with pans over an open flame. We’ll break for lunch at approximately 12:00pm, cooking and sharing food around the fire. Using skills developed in the previous session, we may also construct shelters if weather conditions require. The session will include a creative element, making charcoal pencils from the fire for use in future sessions. By the end of the session, you will have: - Learned how to safely build and maintain a woodland fire - Practised a range of outdoor cooking methods - Developed confidence using fire as a practical outdoor tool - Created charcoal for future creative projects - Reflected on the relationship between fire, focus and community What to bring Weather can be unpredictable at this time of year, so please come dressed for all conditions with: - Waterproof layers - Sturdy footwear - Warm layers - Sun protection if needed - Hat Please bring: - Lunch to cook over the fire - A refillable water bottle - Flask of tea/coffee if desired Getting here The site can be accessed on foot, by bike or by car.
